Asynchronous Multimedia Annotations for Web-Base Collaboration in Biology Education
This is hedgehog related work on the annotation of Multimedia files. Our focus is on textual annotations
and on an architecture to support textual annotations. Paper coming soon.
This paper is a result of joint work with the CLS Lab.

An Interface Markup Language for Web3D
In this work, we seek to design uniform user interfaces for a variety of 3D visualization
techniques currently used to deliver 3D data for visualization over the
internet.
This paper is based on joint work with the Multimedia Lab.

Managing Ambiguity in Mode Inferencing
The inferred mode protocol (Saund and Lank, UIST 2003) uses mediators to manage ambiguity in the
recognition process. In this work, we outline our studies of stylus orienation and pressure to
manage ambiguity in the inferred mode protocol.

Sloppy Selection: Providing an Accurate Interpretation of Imprecise Selection Gestures
This paper describes work in the analysis of motion dynamics of stylus
gestures to determine accuracy of the gesture. We use the model of
dynamics created to determine tolerance for loop-based selection gestures
(commonly called lasso selection).

Histogram-Based Visualizations for Large Time Dependent Data Sets
Browsing for data in large data sets is challenging. In this work, we try to leverage familiarity
with the data set, and allow access to the data set using interactive histograms. The goal is to
allow people to perceive patterns in familiar data sets to support more efficient search and
retrieval. This work is funded by Microsoft Research.

Fluid Sketching on a Pocket PC
Focus+Context sketching (Lank and Phan, CHI 2004) is a technique for combining a drawing context
and high resolution focus area on a Pocket PC using display surface distortion techniques. Here I
detail some on-going work in the design of systems that automatically reposition the focus
area, thus increasing drawing fluidity.

Zero Knowledge Access to a Smart Classroom Environment
The Smart Classroom project is largely a test-bed environment for validating pen-based
interfaces in a real world setting. In this paper, we describe our architecture for flexibly
allowing students to participate in the smart classroom. We try to eliminate dedicated client-side
software using webstart and JINI. In our architecture, students need only install Java to enable
their personal computers to become clients in the environment.
